A BIT ABOUT ME
I live in Avalon on Sydney's Northern Beaches with my hubby, two girls, a super-friendly cat and flock of jazzy hens. I love nothing better than being on / in / by the water or pottering about in the garden. I've travelled pretty far and wide and enjoy exploring nature, food and different cultures. Before becoming a mum and getting hooked on birth and newborns, I worked as a qualitative market researcher and still do some communications work 'on the side'.
I've been supporting couples in pregnancy, birth and postnatally since 2012.
The birth of my first daughter inspired me to train as a doula. Her birth was one of the most beautiful and challenging days of my life and a real eye opener. It showed me the importance of: having balanced information; knowing your choices; feeling listened to and respected; and, doing some self-reflection and solid preparation for birth and parenthood.
That way you can go into it feeling 100% supported, trusting yourself completely and able to truly let go.
I am continually updating my knowledge and skills through research, reading and training e.g. Spinning Babies, Optimal Maternal Positioning, Birthing from Within, We Birth Emergencies in Childbirth and Breastfeeding certificates.
EDUCATOR & ADVOCATE
I became a certified Hypnobirthing Australia™ practitioner in 2015 and used the tools myself for my second birth.
It's so great to see couples gain confidence as they learn all about how the body works in birth and how they can work together to make the experience more connected and enjoyable.
I volunteer for Homebirth NSW and am a member of Friends of Northern Beaches Sydney - both are consumer groups advocating for women's choices.
As a Positive Birth Movement Facilitator I run groups for pregnant and new mums to share and discuss birth and motherhood. This is another way to help shift the culture of birth back to wonder, joy and support, instead of fear and disempowerment.
I'm passionate about helping parents to be informed, inspired and full of confidence in their own abilities and instincts. So they can let go to the natural process of birth, and go on to positive, confident parenting.
My own births and years of doula'ing have shown me that any 'type' of birth can be positive and beautiful. No matter where or how your baby is born, you should feel it was YOUR birth and you were treated with respect and kindness. Empowering yourself with knowledge and having a great team makes a huge difference to how you feel about your birth.
It makes me really happy to be able to play a role in helping women to feel supported and stronger through birth and early motherhood.
Seeing birth partners in awe of the woman they love as she works to bring her baby into the world is a favourite aspect of my work too.
